In a recent blog post, 3 Finishing Touches for Your Pool, we briefly touched on how pool coping can add a unique and personalized touch to your pool area. Today, we’re going to dig and explore the coping options available. To recap, coping is the material above the tile line that generally covers the top of the pool structure. It is used to separate the pool’s structure from the decking, but can also serve as a frame around the pool. Adding or installing coping at the onset of a project has many benefits, including increased safety, costs savings in the long run from reduced maintenance and overall style.
There are a number of choices when selecting coping so it’s important to have all the facts before making a final decision. Here are four options when selecting pool coping:
- Paver
Pavers simulate natural stone and are available in a wide range of colors. They are strong and give any pool area a beautiful, natural look. The average cost of paver coping is $20 to $25 per linear foot.
- Brick
Brick coping is similar to paver coping. It is also very strong and resists stains while offering a classic, yet sophisticated look. The average cost of brick coping is typically $25 to $30 a linear foot.
- Concrete
Concrete coping is one continuous piece of coping that is typically poured onsite. This option can prove to be more cost-effective ($6 to $10 per linear foot) for those who have more modest budgets.
- Natural stone
Natural stone is the most costly type of coping (anywhere from $35 to $55 per linear foot), however, it does offer the most options when it comes to design aesthetics and safety. There are numerous styles available from sandstone and limestone, to granite, clay, slate, and more. No matter what type, travertine / natural stone is virtually maintenance-free and long-lasting.
